Walks usually start at either 10 am, 1pm (winter) or 2pm (summer). Other start times are sometimes possible! The experience lasts 90 mins – 2 hours.
The ultimate animal experience days for donkey lovers! Walk Maverick & Goose, sweet Miniature Mediterranean donkeys across scenic farmland. You’ll follow quiet pathways either along a quiet valley or uphill with great views towards Pen Y Fan and The Black Mountain in the Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales. The walks are tailored to the weather conditions and the walkers!
Your experience will start by grooming your chosen donkey and getting to know them a little better. Then, we’ll load up their mini panniers with some snacks for your picnic (included within the price) before setting off for a gentle walk with your furry friends.
The walk is across farmland and and ancient paths with easy access, and will include a break half-way for a light picnic before returning through fields, tracks or lanes to the barn. The paths may be muddy and slightly uneven with some sections with inclines, but the walk is usually slow and careful with lots of foraging stops for the donkeys along the way. A flatter easier walk is available on request, which we also use during really muddy winter months.
If you would like to buy undated vouchers as a present, these are valid 12 months as standard so you can look forward to a special day out with friends and family in 2023 or 2024. Pop to our Gifts page for these or stay on this page to see our booking calendar for availability.
The Dinky Donkeys live on a smallholding near Sennybridge, so pre-booking is required and full directions are sent when you book. All donkey lovers will be charmed by the little mini donkeys. You will not only learn all about donkeys and their health & welfare, but will also get to know their wonderfully different characters. Cuddles and selfies with the little donkeys are almost compulsory, and usually demanded by them once they get to know you.
Although animal-loving children are very welcome, this is by no means a child’s activity and most of our visitors are adults of all ages. As we have tiny groups, you will have a chance to really get to know the Dinks, and more than ample time to enjoy engagement with them.
We take your safety seriously – please be assured that we take all reasonable steps to avoid any risks of Covid-19 transmission. All interaction is outdoors, with frequent anti-viral treatment of equipment and on site hand washing facilities. The snack picnic consists of pre-packed food and drink (Welsh Cakes, Crisps, Granola Bar, fruit and a drink but we can usually accommodate dietary requirements with notice).
You can also stay nearby and enjoy a great Staycation and we are happy to recommend the best places to stay in the Brecon Beacons as well as great ways to make the most of the rest of your stay.
Our animal experience days are usually done within tiny groups. If you have over 4 people within your group, please send us an enquiry so we can adapt the experience for a larger group and add-on spaces are available at £15 per person including the picnic. It is also possible to book the donkeys and their handler just for you with the “Private Dinky Walk” option, so you can be sure to have the donkeys all to yourselves no matter your group size.
Please note that the donkeys are quite young so do sometimes display boisterous behaviour. If this is the case, their handler will advise the best way to proceed safely, but we advise that children under 5 cannot lead a donkey and must be supervised at all times. Under 16s are not permitted to lead their own donkey as they are extremely strong!
All interactions between the donkeys and children will be at the discretion of the trainer for safety reasons. The walk, although relatively easy, would be too long for under 5s. In this instance we suggest any families with young children book a bespoke group and have a shorter walk variation with the picnic within a safe field which also has scenic views.
This experience is available year round on any day of the week, usually 10am, 1pm in winter or 2pm in summer, and evening walks are also available in summer. If you don’t see your preferred date available here or would like to check or request a start time, please use the enquiry box or contact us to request a specific date and we’ll try and set up a walk for you! It is also possible to bring the Dinkies to you for a walk or special event if you are not too far away.
Please book or enquire here for specific dinky dates, but if you wish to buy an undated voucher, please visit our Gifts section where you can either buy specific or general Gift Vouchers as great special presents.
What to Wear on your Walk
Long sleeves & trousers are recommended plus strong insect repellent in summer as there are horse flies that bite!
Wellies or sturdy walking boots advised, (even in summer as the ground can still be muddy).
CAN DOGS COME ALONG?
No! Sorry, but dogs are not allowed on our walks as they can stress the animals. When it is hot, we do not have any shady places to park, so please do not assume you can leave your dog in the car while you visit. Please contact us if you would like a recommendation for a dog sitter.
CAN I SEE THE PIGS?
The Pigs are at a different location about 30 minutes’ drive away, so please bear this in mind if you wanted to book both activities on the same day.
CAN I REACH YOU BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT?
No! We are in a rural area with a tiny population that doesn’t have any bus services near enough to walk from. The nearest town accessible by train then bus is Brecon, so we would suggest staying there and travelling by taxi. You could also stay in Sennybridge which is over 3 miles away, but there are no taxi services & you will still pay for a taxi to come from Brecon. Do please lobby Welsh Government if you think that is unreasonable.
