A great experience for wildlife lovers – see conservation in action at a Hedgehog Rescue. Learn the basics of 1st aid and emergency care to help sick & injured hedgehogs and see how the Rescue cares for these lovely creatures before reintroduction to the wild.
This fascinating and enjoyable morning at West Wales Hedgehog Rescue covers general welfare, correct feeding, conservation and rehabilitation of hogs and hoglets. You will be taught what to look out for in terms of general health and parasites, with best practice for how to treat them and at what stages to seek professional advice. You will be shown some of the hedgehogs in their care and late June to September there are usually orphaned hoglets (baby hedgehogs) that need to be hand-reared with syringe feeding.
Di O’Keeffe started the West Wales Hedgehog Rescue four years ago and is RSPCA accredited. She provides year round care for hedgehogs at her Lampeter hoggery, offering help & guidance to foster carers, much of which information is covered in this experience and will be included in a handout at the end of the morning. This is an informal session with a maximum of 4 people so you can feel free to ask questions and should feel confident by the end of the morning to be able to assess and help any hedgehogs in need.
Tea & coffee with biscuits will be offered mid-morning. The experience is for 16’s & over only (sorry!).
The calendar dates shown are during the times that the rescue is almost certain to have hedgehogs to show you. We welcome enquiries for other dates and we will also add more dates early summer depending upon the weather, as this affects hibernation patterns.
As with all Good Day Out experiences, a good cause benefits from you buying a voucher. In the case of the Hedgehog Experience you can raise money for animal welfare as a portion of each voucher will go to West Wales Hedgehog Rescue.
West Wales Hedgehog Rescue is run by Di O’Keeffe who is a registered carer and rehabilitator for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and the RSPCA. It is the main Hedgehog rescue for for Mid and West Wales and is dedicated to helping these little creatures and reintroducing to the wild as quickly as possible wherever this is possible.
