Spend a day caring for your own little dinky donkey

What to expect?

Our Mini Donkey day session is an introduction to horse and donkey husbandry including all the work!

This is a great present for animal-lovers who would like to know more about handling and caring for some equines including the Good Day Out Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys, Maverick & Goose. This animal encounter experience also includes meeting horses Ed & Shamrock who live on the same yard.

You can book as an individual or for x 2 people but there will only be 2 people maximum on the session so you will have serious donkey cuddles and interaction for the day with the little lads. This is only suitable for adults or older teens accompanied by an adult.  If you want to come on a date not shown, just get in touch and we can let you know if it’s possible.

You’ll spend around 90 mins on the normal daily tasks from 8.30am, feeding, fetching water, mucking out, poo picking the field, grooming and sweeping. Scratches, cuddles and interaction are encouraged with the mini donkeys and they usually try to help in some way.

After a coffee break, we’ll take the Dinks for a walk along the local green lanes and scenic farmland bordering the Brecon Beacons and if weather allows, we’ll have a snack picnic on the walk.

A veggie lunch is included at our smallholding or we will head to a local cafe.

The afternoon session is interactive agility games with The Dinks. The donkeys love their games and it is really great to see how different they are from when you are walking with them. We use positive reinforcement techniques and at all times we consider how the donkeys are responding and reacting.

Common Questions

This experience combines learning donkey husbandry and welfare with walking and playing agility games with the mini donkeys.

Handling of the donkeys is part of the experience but some manual tasks can be tailored to suit, should you have any fitness issues. This is a fun collaborative insight into how equines are cared for every day, especially throughout Winter.

It is 1:2 ratio group so very immersive & interaction and questions are encouraged about their daily care and welfare.

Please enquire about dates to suit you if your preferred date is not shown in the calendar, as this is usually possible as long as your dinky donkey trainer and The Dinks are available.

If you wanted to book as a larger group, just email us and we can let you know how that can work. This is only suitable for adults or older teens accompanied by an adult.

If you wish to buy an undated voucher, please use the Buy a Voucher button either buy specific or general Gift Vouchers as great special presents. All our vouchers come with information and a gift card as standard.

There is great Brecon Beacons holiday accommodation at the farm next door and B&Bs nearby so this could be booked as part of a package to make a great mini break in Wales. Get in touch if you are interested in extending the experience as we are happy to recommend great walks and cultural visits nearby, no matter the weather!

Long sleeves & trousers are recommended plus strong insect repellent in summer as there are horse flies that bite!

Wellies or waterproof boots advised, (even in summer as the ground can be muddy).

Hot & cold drinks are available through the day. Lunch is provided which will be either soup / cheese / bread at the smallholding or we will head to a local cafe.

The donkey walk includes a snack picnic of welsh cakes, granola bar, crisps, apple and a drink. Please advise us of any food allergies or if you are vegan as we can cater accordingly.

No! Sorry, but dogs are not allowed on our walks as they can stress the animals. When it is hot, we do not have any shady places to park, so please do not assume you can leave your dog in the car while you visit. Please contact us if you would like a recommendation for a dog sitter.

All our experiences are held in small or tiny group sizes so we don’t allow any bystanders who have not booked in. For the Own Your Own Dinky Donkey Day, we have a maximum of 2 spaces on a join-in session, so if you have booked a single space, that is what is what it is.

The Pigs are at a different location about 30 minutes’ drive away and are a totally different experience.

The sheep dog sessions are about a 45 minute drive away.

No! We are in a rural area with a tiny population that doesn’t have any bus services near enough to walk from. The nearest town accessible by train then bus is Brecon, so we would suggest staying there and travelling by taxi. You could also stay in Sennybridge which is over 3 miles away, but there are no taxi services & you will still pay for a taxi to come from Brecon. Do please lobby Welsh Government if you think that is unreasonable.

Please email us or call 01874 749092 with your preferred dates and voucher codes.

As with all Good Day Out experiences, a good cause benefits from every participation. In the case of the Own Your Own Donkey Day, a portion of every participation is set aside to subsidise any local people with health issues that wish to visit but would be unable to without support.
