Want to move sheep like in One Man and His Dog? Meet some working sheep dogs and their young owner, Ross Games, who breeds and trains Welsh Border Collies for working farms as well as competition trials. Moving sheep using working dogs is a traditional rural skill which is increasingly rare but is fantastic to watch.
Ross will introduce a selection of his dogs and show how he works with them at different levels of their education. After some demonstrations, you will have the opportunity to have a go at instructing a dog with some training sheep, and you will also have a tour of the farm and its animals.
This friendly and informal experience is held on a traditional working farm in the Black Mountains near Crickhowell in the Brecon Beacons. Dates will be from March to November – please go to our Gifts section for gift vouchers where people can book their own dates in 2020.
Times: 10.00am – 11.30am – venue Cwmdu near Crickhowell. Children of age 17 and under must be accompanied by a paying adult. Sorry no visitors’ dogs as we are a sheep farm and the surrounding common land is freely grazed by sheep. As this is a very small group experience on a working farm, bystanders or spectators are not permitted.
Ideal for couples (especially as a 7th wedding anniversary wool present!) and also individuals with a maximum of 6 people per join-in session unless you book in as a specific group. Groups of more than five can also enquire about booking their own session. The comfort of the dogs and the sheep is taken into consideration at all times. We do not currently have a Shearing or Lambing experience but please enquire or sign up for our (infrequent) Newsletters if this is something you would like to receive information about any sheep related experiences in the future.
Please book or enquire here for any other dates, but if you wish to buy an undated voucher, please visit our Gifts section where you can either buy specific or general Gift Vouchers as great special presents. Individuals can book on the calendar dates but this experience is also possible for small groups of at least 5 people to book for your own dates if Ross and his dogs are free.
10.00 am start – lasting 90 mins.
As with all Good Day Out experiences, a good cause benefits from you buying a voucher. In the case of the Sheep Dog Experience, a portion of each voucher will go towards the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI).
This benevolent charity helps farmers and their family during times of need.
